The Maya Book of Life:
Understanding the Xultun Tarot
by Michael Owen
Read the Reviews!
The Maya Book of Life explores the archetypes and alchemy of the major arcana of the Xultun Tarot through indigenous teachings and the analytical psychology of C G Jung. The Xultun Tarot was created by New Zealander Peter Balin in 1976 based on images from Maya history and culture. It is the only tarot deck where the major arcana form a complete picture. This picture is not only a symbolic image of the alchemical marriage of spirit and matter but also a map of what Jung called the individuation process. The Maya Book of Life is the companion book to the Kahurangi Press reprinting of the original edition of the Xultun Tarot.
Michael Owen is a clinical psychologist in private practice and author of Jung and the Native American Moon Cycles. He lives in New Zealand.

FROM THE LAST CHAPTER: Chapter 31 Planet Earth

The last row of the Book of Life faces inwards to the psyche and outwards to the cosmos. In the inner world the results of a life lived consciously are symbolised in alchemy as the fruit of the sun and the moon tree. This marriage of opposites has a transformational effect on the past and the future of humankind. Our deepest wound becomes our highest gift and we become a Two-legged, One-hearted Human in good relation with all of the Worlds. In the outer cosmos, this row of cards say what the Maya have always known will happen. In 2012, when Sirius, the Pleiades, the moon and the sun marry in the Heart of Heaven, Quetzalcoatl will return and the Earth will flower.
The body of the Fool is gone. Leaving only the flower of the soul, the essence. Beside it sits the pot that once held starwater, food for the gods. The pot now burns copal, food for the gods. And they are the same, water ever turns to fire. The Smoking Mirror once held the Lovers’ world. The Earth now holds this blue saltwater mirror of the Heart of Heaven. And they are the same, fire ever turns to water. In the other we see the world, in the world we see the other. The waters of grief have burned away and left an ocean. The waters of the heart burn with praise.
This is our world.
